3rd Meeting, May 13-14, 2004 - Ankara

John Innes, Lead Operations Officer, opened the 3rd Youth Voices of Turkey meeting. The Group evaluated the past two months and planned the outline of the meeting.

 

The feedback session followed by Robin S. Horn’s presentation, Lead Education Specialist from the World Bank, about Turkey Basic Education Project, a US $300 million loan to support the implementation of the Government’s Basic Education Program by supporting the development of preschool education as an integral part of basic education, and expanding special needs education.

The afternoon session took place at ILO Office in Ankara. The Group met with UN HIV/AIDS Committee. Mehmet Kontas, UNAIDS Programme Officer from International Organization for Migration (IOM), talked about HIV/AIDS and Turkey.

Lila Pieters, Programme Coordinator, from UNICEF also made a presentation about Combating HIV/AIDS, and youth issues in Turkey as well.

The Group had a meeting with Ali Kapucu, Local Initiatives Coordinator for the Social Risk Mitigation Project (SRMP), to learn about the opportunities and obstacles for small entrepreneurs at local level.

Civil servants from General Directorate of Youth & Sports gave information about the Government’s youth programs.

The afternoon session was a follow-up meeting with Andrew N. Vorkink, Country Director. Mr. Vorkink replied the questions about the World Bank activities in Turkey and shared his observations about the economic situation.

Before closing the Group reviewed the program and planned next meeting.
