Adana is an ancient city tracing its roots back to 3,000 BC. with many cultures having left their imprint. Today Adana is a bustling commercial city with over 1.4 million people. The city and province of Adana have been very active in implementing activities supported by the World Bank. During a recent visit, the new World Bank Country Director for Turkey, Ulrich Zachau, observed the following positive results achieved through World Bank support to ISKUR, KOSGEB, MEB, SYDGM, kaymakamliks, municipalities and NGOs:

  • high technology small business incubator , focusing on nurturing high technology enterprises based upon information technology and its application to a global economy, but based in Adana. 32 enterprises are currently active, and 9 have already graduated within the 2 year life-span of the incubator. Although 8 other small business incubators have been established in Turkey, only in Adana has a high technology small business incubator been established - with applications ranging from global positioning satellite technology, computer software design through to the application of laser technology for health-care;

  • social integration of disadvantaged youth, through educational and social development programs implemented by an effective local NGO - the youth from poor outlying districts of Adana have noted how art and theatre have increased their self-esteem and given them the opportunity to become networked into modern Adana;
