Avian influenza is a transboundary disease that affects the entire world due to its epidemiology. The disease agent is carried to the countries located on migratory routes via migratory birds, and occasionally causes outbreaks.  Avian influenza disease first broke out in 2005 in Turkey. The “Avian Influenza and Human Pandemic Preparedness and Response Project” supported by the World Bank has been implemented in our country since 2006.
At present, all related ministries, institutions and agencies, local administrations, non-governmental organizations and private sector of the Republic Turkey have jointly taken the measures required for preventing the disease. As important as the activities performed under the project is the due sensitivity and care among the citizens and media regarding the issue. For this reason, one of the most important components of the project is public awareness raising. The Strategic Communication Working Group, established in 2006 with a view to creating awareness in the public about the risks and potential impacts of the disease, supporting information and communication activities, and ensuring necessary cooperation and coordination among the parties, carries on with its activities at full pace.  Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ankara University, and World Bank held a meeting on 6 November 2008 in Ankara for the promotion of public information materials prepared under Avian Influenza and Human Pandemic Preparedness and Response Project and responsible journalism approach in avian influenza communication.
