This report focuses on Turkey's ambitious fiscal adjustment which has facilitated a substantial decline in the public debt ratio together with a strong economic performance since 2001 and looks at existing vulnerabilities that underscore the need for continuous fiscal discipline. The report argues that fiscal space to meet expenditure pressures needs to be created by a combination of structural public expenditure reforms, expenditure reallocations, and continuing tax reform efforts.

In 2000, the Turkish government started a thorough realignment of agricultural support policies. This report reviews the impact of subsidy reform in the agricultural sector.

Disinflation, Fiscal Sustainability, and Labor Adjustment in Turkey - (Jan. 2006)
Paper analyzes the effects of monetary policy and fiscal adjustment on output and unemployment in Turkey. The model on which the analysis is based accounts for rural-urban migration, a large urban informal sector, flexible exchange rates, a dollarized banking system, and interactions between default risk on government liabilities, credibility, and inflation expectations.

Joint Poverty Assessment Report - (Aug. 2005)
This report sets out a new poverty line methodology for Turkey, as the basic measure of poverty in the country. However, several poverty lines are calculated for the purpose of international comparability, and comparability to the Bank's poverty measures, using the 1987 and 1994 data.

This report summarizes a strategy for accelerating the liberalization of the natural gas market in Turkey in line with the objectives of the Natural Gas Market Law of 2001.

Country Assistance Evaluation - (Dec. 2004)
Turkish economic growth in the period since 1990 has been characterized by a high degree of volatility. Growth averaged over 7 percent between 1995 and 1997, in spite of inflation that went as high as 90 percent a year. Turkey benefited from relatively high growth rates in the richer economies, which led to growth in exports, demand for Turkish workers and the supply of remittances.

Preventable Losses: Saving Lives and Property Through Hazard Risk Management
This strategy paper aims to raise awareness and understanding of the exposure of countries in the region to natural hazards, and to provide a strategic, proactive framework for mitigation and prevention.
